units for PV=nRT

What are the units that we are supposed to use for each element of PV=nRT?

n: mole
r: constant
T: kelvin

P: Pressure: varies, can be atm, bar, and some others - it'll depend on the problem
V: Volume: Liters
n: moles
R: Gas constant, can change depending on what unit P is in
T: Temperature in Kelvin

R is the universal gas constant that can be in many different variations in terms of units. However, for this class, I believe we will be primarily focusing on R= 8.3145 J/mol·K since T in PV=nRT will be in Kelvin as Dr. Lavelle stated in class. Hope this helps!

The Units for PV=nRT depend on what you are solving for. Normally V will be in liters, P will be in atm, T will ALWAYS be in Kelvin, and n will be in moles. R is a constant whose value depends on the units of the other components. Say you were solving for P with the units given above, the equation would read nRT/V and the units of R would be L*atm/(K*mol). This would allow everything to cancel except atm, the unit for pressure.

For P (partial pressure), bar and atm are used almost interchangeably as their values are apparently quite similar.
