$w=-P\Delta V$
and
$w=-\int_{V_{1}}^{V_{2}}PdV=-nRTln\frac{V_{2}}{V_{1}}$

expansion work question

If a question states that a reaction between two gasses takes place, but does not specify a volume or a change in volume, how do we know if expansion work is done?

Re: expansion work question

If there is said to be no change in volume, then no expansion work has been done. If you are given moles and temperature, you can calculate work from -nRT. If that is positive and you are not in an isolated system, expansion work has been done.
