### Fundamentals E Question E.1

E.1 The field of nanotechnology offers some intriguing possibili- ties, such as the creation of fibers one atom wide. Suppose you were able to string together 1.00 mol Ag atoms, each of radius 144 pm, into one of these fibers by encapsulating them in carbon nanotubes. How long would the fiber extend?

The question doesn't specify whether to leave the answer in pm or to convert it to a different unit. Is there a specific unit our answer should be in?

If it doesn't specify, I would just go with what the problem is using. I would just go with the pm for measurement of length.

Okay so first of, you are right that it doesn't specifically ask for a certain unit so technically you can leave it as pm. However, the solutions manual gives the answer in "m"/meters which is Fundamental/base unit but it also converts it to "km" which confuses me. So I believe as long as you have the equivalent in pm you should be fine. That's my assumption.

I had a similar problem with addressing the steps to this problem. However I believe Avogadro's Number is involved in the number of atoms per 1 mol of ___. pm stands for pico meter, which is a unit we learned today in lecture. You also have to know that since the radius is 144pm, then you must find the diameter which is 144(2)= 288pm.

1.0 mol atoms X 6.022x10^23/1 mol of Ag X 288pm/1atom X 1m/10^12

Once you solve the above, you should get the correct answer. Hope this was helpful!
