This video explains the idea very simply: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIuXl7o6mAw

Re: Drawing Lewis Structures
You first add up the number of valence electrons for each of the atoms. Then, you try to make sure you try to make it so each atom has 8 valence electrons with the exception of H(only can share 1 bond), and a elements that have period 3 or higher.

Re: Drawing Lewis Structures
With lewis dot structures, you are dotting out the number of valence electrons you have for each element. With molecules you put the atom with the least amount of electronegativity in the middle and then all the others around it. Then you just have to count out the total electrons and make sure they all have 8 or the amount the exceptions can have.

Re: Drawing Lewis Structures
does anyone have any tips for making sure that you have enough valence electrons drawn when accounting for double bonds?

Re: Drawing Lewis Structures
they basically represent the valence electrons and there is eight of them
