Chemical Bonds

Postby 305339018 » Sun Oct 27, 2019 10:55 pm

What is the reason behind why chemical bonds form? I know it's because bond atoms have lower energy that separate atoms but that doesn't make sense to me.

atoms want to be in the lowest potential energy state and chemical bonds achieve this

Picture yourself on top of a tree: you have high potential energy and are in a very unstable state.
Similarly, atoms don't like having a high potential energy; they'd rather create a bond and be stable at their lowest potential energy state.

By forming a bond atoms become more stable. This is why it takes energy to break a bond - they want to remain in a more stable state and will not willingly go back to being less stable.

^^ atoms become more stable with bonds
