Polarizable vs Polarizing
What is the difference between "highly polarizable" and "high polarizing power"? They both result in an ionic bond with a greater covalent character.

Re: Polarizable vs Polarizing
They essentially refer to the same concept of ionic compounds having some covalent character; however, "highly polarizable" applies to anions (its electrons are being pulled by the cations) while "high polarizing power" applies to cations (whose positive charge pulls on the electrons of anions).

Re: Polarizable vs Polarizing
Another way to put it is that polarizing power increases among cations from left to right and bottom to top, while polarizability increases from right to left and top to bottom.

I am still unsure of what covalent character means, can anyone explain?

Re: Polarizable vs Polarizing
Since in forming covalent bonds, electrons are shared between neighboring atoms, an increase in covalent character means that even though in forming ionic bonds, electrons from the less electronegative atom are taken by the more electronegative atom, the less electronegative atom would actually attract the electrons to the bonding region to some extent.
Anions with large size and rich in electrons are "highly polarizable," because they have highly distorted electrons. Cations with small size and high charges have "high polarizing power," because they have large distortions.
