ionic vs. covalent
how would you show that a molecule is ionically bonded or covalently bonded through a lewis structure?

Re: ionic vs. covalent
An ionic bond would be denoted as the cation being [M]+ with the anion having the donated electron(s) surrounding it with a charge [M]-. A covalent bond has a line for each bond its sharing electrons make. H2 is H-H because its electrons make a single bond

Covalent molecules share electrons, this is shown by a line in between the atoms. Ionic molecules do not share electrons.

Re: ionic vs. covalent
Covalent bonds share electrons across the elements in the molecule. In ionic bonds, the cation "gives" its electron(s) to the anion.

Re: ionic vs. covalent
On the lewis structure you would connect with lines the covalent bonds since they are sharing the electrons.

Re: ionic vs. covalent
When drawing our Lewis structures, is it necessary to indicate if bonds are covalent or ionic?

Re: ionic vs. covalent
Solely based off of the visual representation of a Lewis Structure, a covalent bond is represented with a line between two atoms, as they are sharing electrons. In an ionic bond, the atoms are not sharing electrons and are not represented with a line between them.
