Dipole moment

Postby EvaLi_3J » Sun Nov 17, 2019 5:55 pm

Can anyone please explain what exactly is dipole moment again? Why is it called "moment"?

The dipole moment is basically when a partially negatively charged atom in a polar covalent bond is attracted to another positively charged thing (usually the positively charged atom of another polar covalent bond or a cation). This isn't like a bond, but there is a very weak, but still significant attractive force that forms between the two molecules.

Dipole moment is just a term to describe attraction between molecules. Atoms in a molecule like H2O are unequal in electronegativity; the O atom pulls electrons more strongly, obtaining a partial negative charge, while the H atoms become partially positive. This creates a dipole.

Do you know if a dipole moment is the same as dipole-dipole?

Can someone also explain the difference between dipole-dipole and induced dipole-induced dipole.

How do we determine when dipoles moments cancel?
