Acid Rain

Postby 305086803 » Fri Dec 06, 2019 3:19 am

Could someone summarize the importance of acid rain in chemistry/this course? It would be super helpful. Thanks!

acid rain is a biological example of acids and bases.

carbon dioxide reacts with water to form carbonic acid and hydronium which decreases the pH of the rain. this has many biological implications such as ocean acidification which is destroying ecosystems (especially with the large output of carbon dioxide in the past 100 years)

Lavelle uses acid rain as an example of how CO2 reaction in the environment with water. CO2 reacts in the atmosphere to make acid rain, and with global warming/greenhouse effect, CO2 emissions are more and more prevalent in biology.

Acid rain is when CO2 reacts in the atmosphere which results in acid rain. This rain, like stated in the name, is Acidic. When there is an excessive amount of CO2 in the air there will be a lot of acid rain. This contributes to the greenhouse effect and global warming.

Sulfuric dioxide comes from burning petroleum products, coal, etc., and reacts with water vapor to form acidic rain. Clean coal contains less percentage of sulfur, whereas dirty coal contains more percentage of sulfur.

To what extent will this possibly be on the final?
