What is the environmental impact of burning fossils, and the use of alternative fuels as an energy source?

The combustion of fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere which contributes to global warming. Some alternatives for fossil fuels are ethanol, methane, and biodiesel. One way that this could be asked on the midterm is calculating the heat of combustion.

Also, by global warming, the ecological environment would be significantly changed, leading to the extinguish of many species because they cannot adapt the new ecological environment anymore. The destruction on the ecosystem might be so severe that even ecosystems that cover large areas and sustain numerous species might crash.
