Boltzmann Formula
For the number of orientations in W in the Boltzmann equation, is it found by how many resonance structures there are ?

Re: Boltzmann Formula
The number of orientations is the number of orientations where a molecule would be in a position with equal energy. W would be the number of positions to the power of however many molecules the question says.

Re: Boltzmann Formula
W, or degeneracy, in the Boltzmann formula would be defined as the number of ways that are possible to achieve a given energy state.
W would equal (# states)^(#species).
W would equal (# states)^(#species).

Re: Boltzmann Formula
Not necessarily, as not all molecules have resonance. It's the number of orientations a molecule can have, and a molecule can have multiple orientations even without resonance.

Re: Boltzmann Formula
Resonance structures do contribute to the number of microstates a molecule has, but there are other things that contribute as well, such as the vibrational and rotational movements of that molecule.
Re: Boltzmann Formula
W is referring to the degeneracy. W can be calculated by raising the number of different orientations/states by the number of atoms/molecules.

Re: Boltzmann Formula
W here represents the degeneracy
it can be calculated by (# of states possible)^(# of particles involved)
it can be calculated by (# of states possible)^(# of particles involved)

Re: Boltzmann Formula
W is found by doing the number of positions to the power of how many molecules there are. This does have some relation to resonance,

Re: Boltzmann Formula
W refers to the number of possible states of a molecule with equal energy. W= #of states^# atoms.

Re: Boltzmann Formula
You can kind of think of it as the "resonance structures" that a molecule or molecules can have, because essentially the boltzmann equation refers to the amount of different ways or microstates molecules can have.
