It is a solid electric conductor that allows electrons to flow to generate an electrical current. These are your anodes and cathodes. Oxidation takes place in the anode and the electrons are released through an external current to the cathode where reduction takes place.
an electrode is an electrical conductor that carries a current to and from non-metallic materials (solids, liquids, gas, e.t.c). in the example of an electrochemical cell (the diagrams Lavelle shows in his lectures), the electrode is that conductor that is inside the ionized liquid/gas to transfer electrons from the oxidation cell to the reduction cell; ex. the Zinc rod inside a Zn2+ solution that conducts voltage to a Platinum rod within an H+ ionized gas.
