H2O or Metal Ion

Postby Rita Chen 1B » Tue Mar 03, 2020 12:07 am

How can I tell whether a metal ion or H2O is reduced for electrolysis?

According to the reading in section 6O.1, if there is more than one species that is reducible, the species with a higher potential for reduction is preferably reduced.

In this situation you look to see which species has the higher (more positive) standard reduction potential. Sometimes that is H2O and sometimes that is the metal ion but by comparing you will know.
