### electrochemical series

in the outline, it mentions an electrochemical series. what is that referring to?

The electrochemical series is a table of the relative strengths of oxidizing and reducing agents. It shows the oxidizing and reducing power of redox couples, with the strongest oxidizing agents on the top left and strongest reducing agents at the bottom right.

Knowing oxidizing and reducing power helps determine whether K is less or greater than 1, which allows you to determine which direction is favored for an electrochemical cell, or in other words, if the forward or reverse reaction is spontaneous.

It also helps indicate whether cell potential will be positive or negative, given the anode and cathode are defined.

The more positive the electrode, the more oxidizing the reactant. By looking at the electrochemical series, you can determine which reactants would be better oxidizing or reducing agents.

The electrochemical series is just a list of experimentally obtained reaction cell potentials. The more positive the value, the more likely the molecule will be reduced.
