Registering/Creating Your Chemistry Community Account
Chem 14A Students!
I've been a UA for 10 quarters with Dr. Lavelle and so many students have told me how much Chemistry Community has helped them. Chemistry Community is an amazing resource where you can find detailed explanations for almost every homework question and topic discussed in class. But if you still feel like your exact question hasn't been answered, post it. If you post a great question that creates a thorough discussion, you might even see it show up on an exam. Trust me, the more you use Chemistry Community, the quicker you will grasp the concepts of this course.
To register and create your account, follow the instructions from this pdf (which can also be found on Dr. Lavelle's website): https://lavelle.chem.ucla.edu/wp-content/supporting-files/Chem14A/Chemistry_Community_Student_Registration.pdf
Remember, each week you can get up to 2 easy points just by posting a quality question or by answering another students' post. Remember it is one point per post, for a maximum of 2 points per week. But we encourage you to post as often and as much as you'd like.
I can't stress enough how beneficial Chemistry Community is. Very few classes, if any, on UCLA's campus will have a resource like this which is 24/7 office hours! So register and post your questions!
Also, come to our Peer Learning Sessions! We want to help you, but the only way we can is if you ask questions whether it is online on Chemistry Community or in person in our sessions.
Good luck this quarter!
Your UA,
Ashley Sarquiz

For the Peer Learning Sessions, is there a link to sign up for spots or can you just drop in during the designated sessions?

It is actually 3 points per week, so if you post three times either your own or comments you will get a point.

How do we know that our TA will see our posts? Should we email them our alias?

Re: Registering/Creating Your Chemistry Community Account
If we miss a week can we make it up the next week?
Re: Registering/Creating Your Chemistry Community Account
Some TAs check if you're up to date with your posts at the end of each week and some don't. So if you get a little bit behind I wouldn't worry about it too much, just make sure that you do them eventually. There were a couple weeks where I got behind last quarter and I still ended up getting full points for my posts.

Is it possible to see where you have posted so far?
Re: Registering/Creating Your Chemistry Community Account
So I am a student during corona and i am very confused on how the chemisty coummunity works and how are held accountable for our points?
Re: Registering/Creating Your Chemistry Community Account
Also is it possible for the students to make more than 5 posts or can we only do a maximum of 5 posts a week. And do we just need to have 50 posts by the end of the quarter or is it a weekly assignment due at the same time as sapling?

I'm pretty sure we can only gain a maximum of 5 points every week and those five posts are due every Sunday

Don't forget to change your discussion number if you already took the class last quarter!

I believe it is 5 posts per week for a total of 50 points at the end of the quarter!

They recommended using our name and discussion section :) I'm assuming that makes it easier for them to give us points?

Re: Registering/Creating Your Chemistry Community Account
Yes, it is 5 posts per week for a total of 50 posts (50 points). I personally have my display name as my full name and discussion section, but your account is linked to your UID so that grading our posts would be easier.

Hi! You should be able to, last quarter in 14a, the TAs generally only calculated the total mid quarter and at the end, but if you contact your TA and let them know your technological circumstances I am sure it should be totally fine especially if you make sure to have 50 posts by the end of the quarter!

Hi! I think he clarified in a few emails as well that there's a max of 3 points per week for a total of 30 points over the quarter.

Hi! You can change your alias by clicking your name in the top right-hand corner. A drop-down menu should appear. Click on User Control Panel. There, you'll see your username and password. For some reason, I had to change my password as well as my alias, but it worked. I'm not sure if everybody else has had to change their password as well.

If we missed posting on the first week, does posting extra now (all three comments per week) make up for the missed points?

Yes, making extra posts think week to make up the ones that you didn't do last week makes up for the points.

Re: Registering/Creating Your Chemistry Community Account
Hey! My TA told my class that you won't be punished if you don't post anything for a week or if you are lacking the required post (which is three per week), however, you can make it up in the following week by posting more than what is required during that week. For example, if you only post two comments this week, you should post four the following week to make up from the previous week. Hoped this helped!
